If you are intending to spend some of your time in South Africa on the road, and you’re looking for authentic places to eat, shop and browse, then an attractive, user-friendly book will guide you to exactly the right spot.

South Africa is a land of plenty – not just in terms of scenic beauty, hospitable people and superb accommodation, but also in its produce.
Find corn and coffee, peaches and prickly pears, home-baked breads and home-made jams, cheese and clotted cream, pickles and preserves, sandwiches and steaks, and much, much more at farm stalls sprinkled liberally all over the country. Although some are in big cities, others hidden away in little villages, and some even in the middle of nowhere, at farm stalls you’re guaranteed to discover wonderful fresh produce, real ingredients, real food and charming, often quirky owners.
Cover of the book
Farm Stall to Farm Stall by Jennifer Stern, published by Map Studio, takes you on a journey throughout South Africa, following broad routes between major centres, such as Cape Town to Johannesburg, Johannesburg to the Bush, Durban to Johannesburg, Cape Town to Namibia, as well as other main roads.
Stern, who travelled 13 000km visiting and researching all the farm stalls listed in the book, says in her introduction, ‘If you just hate those MacWimpsters with the funny flat little hamburgers, the weird pale, slightly stale-smelling chips and the superannuated salads’, then the best way to avoid that featureless food is to eat at farm stalls.
‘Some farm stalls are absolutely fabulous, some are just okay, and some are a bit dodgy, but they’re all real and true, and they reflect the culture in which they operate,’ she says.
