AUTHOR – RIKUS TRUTER
Rikus Truter (founder and owner of the well-known website www.lekkerkampplekke.co.za) is married to Loret and they have two beautiful children, Angelique and Karlo. The family now resides in the ‘platteland’, in Heidelberg in the southern Cape, part of the Garden Route.
Rikus grew up and matriculated in Bellville in the Western Cape. Since he was a small boy, holidays were spent camping with family and friends. During school terms, when camping was not an option, he would secretly take his bedding outside and pitch a tent over the fence between him and his neighbour-friend.
After 21 years as a detective in the police force, Rikus decided that it was time to move on and, having some free time on his hands, he started to visit nearby campsites. He visited the well-known ones as well as the hidden camping gems on farms in the region.
In 2010 Rikus founded the page Lekker Kampplekke on Facebook. Initially it was just a Facebook page (over 200 000 followers), but Rikus saw the potential of developing it into a business, and soon afterwards a website was launched where campsites and camp-related products were advertised to the public. After public demand for a book on camping, the next step was to join up with Map Studio, who made his dream come true.
