Map Studio publishes South African road mapping in four formats, and people regularly buy the wrong one. They are not competing products — they do different jobs.
The atlas: for looking things up
The Road Atlas South Africa (R195) covers the country page by page with a place-name index at the back. Its advantage is lookup: you know the name of a town, you find it in the index, you turn to the page. Its disadvantage is that you never see the whole journey at once — a long trip is spread over several pages, and page joins fall in awkward places.
The Glovebox Road Atlas (R145) is the same idea in a smaller book. It fits where the bigger atlas will not, which for most drivers is the point.
The folded sheet: for planning
The South Africa Road Map and the Southern Africa Road Map (R210 each) show the whole country on one sheet. Nothing beats a folded map for the moment before a trip when you are working out whether to go via Colesberg or via Kimberley. You can see both options at the same time, with the distances, which an atlas page cannot show you.
The trade-off is handling. A full sheet is awkward in a moving car.
The regional sheet: for the trip you are actually on
If you know roughly where you are going, a regional map at R210 gives you far more detail over the ground that matters. Map Studio publishes the Western Cape, the Garden Route and Route 62, Mpumalanga, the Kruger and the Panorama Route, Cape Town and surrounds, and the Flower Route up the West Coast.
The pocket map: for the glovebox you forgot to check
The South Africa Pocket Map (R120) is the cheapest insurance in the catalogue. It is not the map you plan with. It is the map that is still in the door pocket when the phone is flat and there is no signal.
So which one?
If you drive the country regularly for work, buy the Glovebox Atlas and keep it in the car. If you are planning one long trip, buy the folded national sheet to plan with and a regional sheet for the part you will actually be driving. If you are buying a gift for someone who drives, the full Road Atlas is the one that looks like a proper book.
